If you are comming from the north of Croatia you can go to the highway A1 Zagreb-Split, to some other alternative directions that are not on the highway (as Zagreb - Karlovac - Plitvice - Gracac - Knin - Sinj - Split - Makarska - Ploce) or from Rijeka along the Adriatic tourist road. Otherwise, if you are comming from the northeast of Croatia, you can go via Bosnia and Herzegovina to the boarder crossing Metković, if you wish to shorten your journey.
